Gaspar Varela is the great-grandson of the Fado singer Celeste Rodrigues and, from a very early age, wished to learn how to play the Portuguese guitar so that he could accompany his great-grandmother. He achieved this dream when he was just seven years old, at the Rádio Amália Gala, playing under the guidance of his teacher and mentor, the guitar player Paulo Parreira. After this, he accompanied Celeste Rodrigues on several occasions. In his still very short musical career, Gaspar has already participated in three albums, Saudade do Futuro, Brincar aos Fados and Vozes de Amália. His inspirations are the Portuguese guitar legends Artur Paredes, Carlos Paredes and Jaime Santos. In addition to his own teacher the guitar player Paulo Parreira. At 15 years old, Gaspar was the youngest guitarist to have his own concert (sold out) in the “Fado no Cais” series at the renowned concert hall CCB in Lisbon. All this talent dint pass unnoticed by the Queen of Pop Madonna. She invited Gaspar to be part of her last tour the Madame X Tour and so for the past year Gaspar is been touring with her playing is Portuguese Guitar in her band a great achievement for such a young musician.
Gaspar is currently working on is next album where he intends to give the Portuguese Guitar a all new dimension of sonorities taking the instrument from the traditional Fado sound where we normally see it.
